I believe any law that’s not enforced for two years should automatically expire.
I have some friends from Europe who are permanent legal residents of the US and with whom I disagree on just about everything political, except this: the US has too many un-enforced laws and it breeds disrespect for the legal system of our country as a whole.
So, let’s just make every law that is broken by more than 25 people and goes un-enforced for a period of 24 months… automatically expire. Think about it, in two years we’d wipe out thousands of laws on the books that are constantly ignored anyway and needlessly complicating our laws to the point where the common citizen doesn’t understand them or respect them. As a result we’d have a leaner, more manageable legal system. The other consequence would be that we’d have our citizens up in arms screaming about things that should be enforced. Wouldn’t that be refreshing? To actually hear from the citizenry that they value law enforcement?
Don’t worry about anarchy either, because if a significant law was actually in danger of expiring it would highlight the lack of law enforcement in that area and everyone would have to decide what to do about it. I think the result would actually be better law enforcement through increased citizen engagement and clearer priorities.
