The Devil in the White City, is a true story (two actually) about the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 and America’s first famous serial killer, H.H. Holmes. It’s quite fascinating and keeps moving at a good pace. The author rather humorously shows his own liberal bias in a few places, but it’s not so heavy handed as to detract from the story.
I was in Chicago for my Grandfather’s funeral and two different people mentionted this book as something I might be interested in. I picked up a copy at O’Hare airport and by the time I landed at LAX I had read the first 165 pages and was hooked.
I love Chicago, history, architecture, inventions, big projects and dreamers so this book was almost tailor made for me. If you have any of these same interests, you should read this book.
