If I want to do something, I find out how to do it independently where I’m the one who takes the risk and, therefore, the one who benefits most from the success.

A successful multi-level marketing (MLM) organization requires: good product, skilled and motivated recruiters, a management team capable of avoiding indictment and last but not least, a lot of people who aren’t afraid of the rejection and hard work required to be successful product salesmen.

If your passion is recruiting, you could do pretty well in an MLM (at least for a while) but you could also make much more as a corporate recruiter. If you’re not a top-notch recruiter then you’re going to need to be a pretty successful salesman to make any money in MLM, so you better pick a product that you really believe in. Unfortunately though, whatever product you end up selling through an MLM, you could always make more money selling the same product for a company that’s really in that industry. Why split the profits with 47 levels of deadbeats above you?

As an entrepreneur who’s had a little bit of success, people frequently ask me about an MLM they heard about. I tell them if they’re an entrepreneur at heart then they should deal with their fears and really become an entrepreneur. But if they’re not an entrepreneur, as most people aren’t, then don’t waste your time pissing off your friends with MLM pitches.

Once you start pitching an MLM you’ll be surprised to find that you never get any of your friends on the phone directly anymore. They’re screening your calls so they can find out if you’re calling to invite them to a movie or a financial freedom seminar.
